The new coronavirus has killed at least 335,538 people worldwide since the first outbreak of the epidemic in China last December, according to a count of official sources compiled by AFP at 1900 GMT Friday.
At least 5,158,750 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in 196 countries and territories. Of these, at least 1,937,200 are now considered recovered.
The counts, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably only reflect a fraction of the actual number of infections.
Many countries only test for symptomatic or more serious cases.
Since 1900 GMT Thursday, 5,784 new deaths and 109,329 new cases have been reported worldwide.
The countries with the highest number of deaths are the United States with 1,627 and Brazil with 1,188.
The United States is also the country most affected with 95,490 deaths for 1,590,225 cases. At least 298,418 people were reported recovered.
After the United States, the hardest hit countries are Great Britain with 36,393 deaths for 254,195 cases, Italy with 32,616 versus 228,658 cases, Spain with 28,628 deaths and 234 824 cases and France with 28,289 deaths and 182,219 cases.
China – excluding Hong Kong and Macao – has reported 4,634 deaths and 82,971 cases to date. There are 78,255 cases recovered.
Europe as a whole has 172,353 deaths for 1,984,377 cases, the United States and Canada have 101,814 deaths for 1,672,638 infections, Latin America and the Caribbean 36,007 deaths for 651,198 cases, Asia 13,498 deaths for 414,482 cases, the Middle East 8,606 deaths for 325,644 cases, Africa 3,131 deaths from 101,775 cases and Oceania 129 deaths from 8,440 cases.
