The leader of the Shiite group who performed the Eid-ul-fitr prayer today in Mabera, Zamfara State, Sidi Manniru explained that the group had confirmed having seen the crescent of the month of Shawwal before performing prayers.
In an interview with the Daily Trust correspondent, Sidi Manniru said that based on their established procedures for spotting the crescent, some of their members reported from local authorities in Yabo State, Illela and Dukkuma City of Isa.
When asked if the group had communicated the view of the moon to the Sultan who presides over Islamic affairs in the country, the group leader said: "For 20 years, we have been following our own procedure for observation of the crescent which is not only for Ramadan but also for other Islamic months as advised by our leader Shiekh Ibrahim Zakzaky in order to avoid the crisis usually experienced at the end of Ramadan ".
Images of Eid prayer performed by group members surfaced on social media platforms, generating reaction in various ways.
Manniru added that "We have members all over the country and we have communicated this development to them"
He said the prayer did not in any way mean a revolt against other authorities as they also abide by government directives on closing places of worship to stem the spread of COVID-19.
